The key assessment for a head-injured patient is the Glasgow Coma Score (GCS), seen at the right. Used in adult and pediatric patients, there is a modified version for use in infants and toddlers. There is also a Children's Coma Score that is specifically for pediatric patients. The GCS is an important component of the initial management of the patient and serves as the basis for classifying head injuries:
Using this classification scheme, severe TBI accounts for about 10% of all cases, moderate another 10% and the remaining 80% are minor TBIs. Note that, with a severe TBI, the highest level of brain function is the subcortical area. |
