The SIDS incidence in the US is currently around 0.5 per 1000 liveborns - a third of what it was 2 decades ago and perhaps nearing an irreducible minimum. However, opportunities still exist for decreasing the SIDS rate even further.

At the same time that the SIDS rate has been decreasing, the incidence of SUDI - the sudden unexpected death of an infant - has been increasing. SUDI (or SUID) is the umbrella category for SIDS, with its own ICD code. If the SUDI remains unexplained after death scene investigation and autopsy, it is classified as a SIDS.
