In Michigan, the Back to Sleep campaign in 1994 was spearheaded by Tomorrow's Child. This organization, an outgrowth of the Michigan SIDS Alliance, is charged by MDCH with running the state's Title V SIDS and Other Infant Death Program. This is especially important in Michigan where for years there has been a higher infant mortality rate (IMR) than in the rest of the US. For example, in 2001, Michigan's IMR was 38th out of 50 states. 30% of all infant deaths occur from 1 month to 1 year and sleep-related deaths account for the majority of these. Decreasing sleep-related deaths is of great interest to MDCH as a way to decrease infant mortality. ![]() |
