Because of the high mortality rates, there must be a high index of suspicion for neonatal sepsis. Therefore, the following tests, known as a "septic workup" are done before antibiotics are started.
In addition, several ancillary tests may be performed to help establish a diagnosis of sepsis in certain clinical conditions.
