Impaired growth is a common problem for patients with BPD. It is due to either inadequate caloric intake or inadequate or borderline oxygenation. Weight is usually affected more than length or head circumference. Early studies indicated there was a correlation between the presence of BPD and decreased somatic growth in infancy. However, even these studies showed improved growth with resolution of pulmonary symptoms. Recent data shows no differences in growth of BPD babies at school age, when adjusted for birthweight and gestational age. Assessment of growth in the BPD infant may be helped by use of the Babson and Benda growth curves, specifically designed for prematures.
