In addition to the previous pathogenetic factors, there are a number of identified clinical risk factors that increase the incidence of BPD.
- Birthweight/gestational age are related inversely to BPD ; i.e. the lower the Bwt/GA, the higher the BPD incidence
- PDA
- Antenatal maternal infection
- Colonization with Ureaplasma urealyticum
- Postnatal sepsis - septic babies have increased prostaglandins and other mediators which can adversely affect a PDA
There are also several clinical scoring systems used to predict the risk of a particular baby developing BPD.
